Image below shows the default arrangement of GIMP windows when it is fired up. You’ll notice that GIMP does not have a single window to handle the Toolbox, Image & Dialogs Windows. These windows are opened up separately. Based on the documentation, this is done purposely because the developer’s community believe that multiple windows offer better user experience.

They are basically 3 parts of windows we need to get ourselves familiar with before start using GIMP:
1. Toolbox Window
This is the GIMP main window. If you close this window, it will exit GIMP. It contains a set of tools for your image manipulation.
2. Image Window
This is the window to display image, each window displays only one image. Multiple images can be opened with multiple windows. These windows contain menu items, which is the main commands of GIMP.
3. Dialogs Window
In GIMP, working panels are called Dialogs. You can keep the Dialogs open or close to free up your workspace. If the dialogs are accidentally closed, it can be accessed using the windows menu, go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs. I personally would prefer to combine all working dialogs into the Toolbox Windows & keep this Dialogs Window closed.
Familiar With The Interface
You will likely to take some times to get used to the GIMP interface. However, once you are familiar with it, you are going to love it.
